CONFIRMED CASES WORLDWIDE SOAR PAST 20 MILLION, AT LEAST 5 MILLION OF THOSE IN THE UNITED STATES //
The coronavirus pandemic has caused devastation around the world as cases and deaths continue to rise. As of August 2020, confirmed coronavirus cases had surpassed 20 million worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University. At least 5 million of those cases are in the United States. Hospitals have been pushed to their limits as patients suffering from the effects of COVID-19 have poured in, leaving medical staff overworked and short of personal protective equipment and supplies. The virus has put several states on lockdown, closing businesses, limiting travel, and shutting down schools. The unemployment rate has risen to the highest levels since the Great Depression. Pro sports have been postponed. Concerts, award shows, and festivals were all cancelled.
As the race for a vaccine progresses and debates continue on issues such as wearing masks and reopening, there are still many questions surrounding the virus and what the future will look like.
